Neurological Diseases
Diseases that involve the neurological system—the brain, the spinal cord, and nerves—are called Neurological Diseases.
There are literally hundreds of diseases in this category, but the ones that we tend to hear of more often are conditions like multiple sclerosis, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), stroke, spinal cord injuries, and Parkinson’s disease.
These problems require medical management at the outset—to both diagnose the problem and consider appropriate medical and/or surgical management.
Signs and symptoms caused by neurological impairments can be numerous and vary between people, even those with the same diagnosis.
Some of the more ‘usual’ symptoms are
-
pain (migraines, neck and back spinal pain)
-
movement disorders, including numbness and tingling in arms and legs, tremor
-
vision, hearing and sense of smell changes
-
cognitive impairments, (confusion, memory loss, concentration changes)
Neurological Conditions
People with neurological conditions are frequently treated or managed in the rehabilitation environment, interacting with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech-language therapists, and other rehabilitation providers.
Symptoms (and problems) related to pain, stress, fatigue, mobility and all the other 🔴 problems can also be challenging ( and at times confusing) for people with
neurological conditions.
Using conservative methods of ‘Self-Management’ (as described in this website), in addition to appropriate medical and/or surgical management, may not change the course of a disease.
But, management of 🔴 problems and involving yourself in a daily schedule to keep yourself as functional and involved in your daily routine as possible, will enable you to live a more stress-less and meaningful day.
Your diagnosis (of your neurological condition) is NOT who you are as a person.
